Waterproof Backer Board
Waterproof Backer Board is a tile substrate designed for wet and moisture-prone areas. It provides a stable base for ceramic and porcelain tile installations and is used in residential, commercial, outdoor, and industrial applications. The category includes cement-based, fiber-cement, polystyrene-based, glass-reinforced gypsum, and water-resistant drywall solutions. The appropriate board type depends on the level of direct water exposure, required strength, thermal performance, and installation area.

Important Information
Cement backer board is moisture-resistant but is not necessarily fully waterproof. In areas exposed to direct or continuous water, the page recommends applying an additional waterproof membrane or coating before tile installation.
The 6 mm board is presented as suitable for tiled floors. The 12 mm board is recommended for heavier tile backing and high-traffic areas.
Water-resistant drywall is intended only for areas exposed to occasional splashes. It should not be used where prolonged direct water exposure is expected.
Polystyrene-based insulation board is lightweight, waterproof, and thermally conductive. It is particularly suitable for wet rooms, pools, spas, steam rooms, and installations with underfloor heating.
Installation generally requires tile adhesive beneath the board, mechanical fastening with suitable screws and washers, sealed perimeter and panel gaps, fiberglass mesh tape over joints, and tile adhesive applied before tiling.
